Sending love. This undeniably incapsulates the conflicting emotions surrounding grief. Thank you for sharing, from one stranger on the internet to another — xx.
I’m sorry for your loss. The way you shared your story was incredibly moving and beautifully written — it reminded me of something a modern-day Edith Wharton might write. Wishing you peace and strength in the days ahead, and a gentle week to come.
Beautiful reflections. What a special and unique relationship you and he shared. I also loved reading about you reconnecting with your nephew/cousins. So many interesting and touching parts in this essay.
As someone with an older father who passed when I was 23 I see and hear you. I have three older brothers and nephews who are my age. I understand the loss that comes from not having the old desk, or the ducks, and the understanding that this day would come from a very young age because “he’s not my grandpa, he’s my dad” becomes a common placed phrase.
A beautiful portrayal of your feelings. A beautiful tribute to your father. I don’t know him but from how you’ve described him, I feel like he would’ve enjoyed and admired this read thoroughly. Your dad seems like an amazing dad and an Amazing man. May he rest in peace. 🩷

This is such a beautiful tribute. I hope you are able to get some of your dad's belongings.

My dad died in September at 79; he has me when he was 48. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Totally. Explaining he wasn’t my grandpa was common for me.
Beautiful and bravely authentic! Just you. Loved it.
